What these spatial tests measure

This category measures mental imagery in motion: rotating, folding or translating a figure in your head and judging the result. It has a property the other categories lack -- the time it takes can be measured directly, and it scales with how far you have to turn the figure.

Shepard and Metzler put a number on that in Science in 1971. Deciding whether two solid figures are the same object took a time that rose linearly with the angle between them, working out to roughly 60 degrees per second: about a second at zero degrees, four to six seconds at 180. The same curve shows up in your own results.

Who takes these tests

Three groups: people preparing for aptitude exams, where mental rotation and solid-figure items are a standard question type; people who design, assemble or read technical drawings; and people who want to know how bad their sense of direction really is.

Worth being clear about the last one: this category measures figure manipulation, which is not the same as navigating. Finding your way also involves remembering landmarks and building a map-like representation of a place. The two are related but not interchangeable.

This is the one category where training clearly transfers

Of the five categories on this site, spatial skill has by far the strongest training evidence. The Uttal et al. meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin (2013) pooled 206 training studies and found an average effect of Hedges's g = 0.47, with gains that transferred to spatial tasks that had not been trained and held up at delayed testing.

That is the opposite of the picture for memory and attention training, where transfer evidence has stayed weak. So this site says practice pays off in this category, and does not say it in the others -- the difference is what the evidence supports, not what sounds encouraging.

How is spatial reasoning tested
The standard method is a mental rotation task: two solid figures are shown, and you decide whether one is the other rotated or its mirror image. Accuracy and response time are both recorded, because speed alone rewards guessing and accuracy alone cannot separate someone who saw it instantly from someone who worked it out slowly.

The mental rotation test asks you to turn a solid figure in your head until it matches another and judge whether they are the same object. How do you solve mental rotation questions faster
Pick one distinctive feature first -- the longest arm, the most unusual bend -- use it to fix the orientation, then check whether the rest lines up. That beats rotating the whole figure. Watch for mirror images: a mirrored figure can never be brought into alignment by rotation, and spotting that rules it out immediately.
What is the minimum number of moves to solve a sliding puzzle
Every solvable 8-puzzle -- the three-by-three sliding puzzle -- can be finished in at most 31 moves, which is the upper bound for that size. How far your move count sits above 31 says more about whether you were planning a route than your completion time does.
Can every sliding puzzle be solved
No. Only half of all possible tile arrangements on a three-by-three board are solvable; the other half cannot be restored by any sequence of legal moves, and the test is the parity of the permutation. Properly built sliding puzzles therefore scramble from a solved state rather than placing tiles at random.
Is spatial ability the same as sense of direction
Related but not the same. Spatial ability as tested here is figure manipulation; finding your way also requires remembering landmarks and integrating a route into an internal map. Someone strong at mental rotation can still get lost, and the reverse happens too.
Is there a gender difference in mental rotation
On mental rotation specifically, a group-average difference is one of the more consistently reported findings in cognitive testing. Individual variation within either group is far larger than the gap between the group means, and training narrows the gap -- the Uttal et al. meta-analysis (2013) found both groups gain from it. Using a group average to predict any particular person's score tells you nothing useful.
