How to read your score

ScoreWhat it means
Under 330 msIn this 3×3 Whack a Mole reaction test, a median under 330 ms falls in the fastest descriptive band. Lower is faster; repeat the test on the same device and compare your own medians before treating one result as stable.
330-389 msIn this 3×3 Whack a Mole reaction test, a median of 330-389 ms falls in the second-fastest descriptive band. Compare repeated runs on the same device, and check that a lower median is not accompanied by more crossed-square taps or missed targets.
390-449 msIn this 3×3 Whack a Mole reaction test, a median of 390-449 ms falls in the middle descriptive band. This interval is not a population average or a definition of normal reaction time; use it to compare your own repeated runs.
450-519 msIn this 3×3 Whack a Mole reaction test, a median of 450-519 ms falls in the second-slowest descriptive band. Repeat the test under the same conditions and compare both the median and error counts before deciding that your result has changed.
520 ms and overIn this 3×3 Whack a Mole reaction test, a median of 520 ms or more falls in the slowest descriptive band. Repeat the test on the same device to see whether this range persists; one run does not establish your usual reaction time.

These five Whack a Mole score bands split this test's 600 ms response window into descriptive ranges; the cut points do not come from population data. They are not norms or percentiles and cannot show how many people you are faster than. Near a band edge, another run can land in the next range, so compare several runs on the same device.

How to play

  1. How do you play Whack a Mole online?: Press Start, then tap the filled circle as soon as it appears. When a hollow crossed square appears, do not tap; wait for the next shape.
  2. How do you practise Whack a Mole reaction speed?: Use the first four practice goes to learn both shapes. You will see whether each choice was right or wrong, and these goes never count toward your score.
  3. How fast should you tap in the Whack a Mole test?: Each shape stays visible for 600 milliseconds. Tap the target before it disappears, but wait for it to appear: a tap before 150 milliseconds is too early and uses that go.
  4. How is a Whack a Mole reaction time score calculated?: Finish all 40 scored goes. Lower is faster: your result is the median hit time in milliseconds, shown with your crossed-square taps and missed targets so you can compare both speed and accuracy.

What this measures

A three by three board shows one shape at a time. Tap the filled circle, but leave the hollow crossed square alone. Four of every five shapes are targets. This test is a non-standardised adaptation, so its result is not interchangeable with clinical instruments.

Each shape stays visible for 600 milliseconds. Your first tap is your answer for that go: tapping the wrong cell is a miss, and tapping while the board is blank or within the first 150 milliseconds is too early. That go is used and is not repeated.

The first four goes are practice and show whether you were right or wrong. The next 40 goes are scored and do not reveal each answer, so use the same approach throughout instead of changing pace after every shape.

Lower is faster. Your score is the median hit time: your valid hit times are put in order and the middle value is reported after unusually distant times are removed. The crossed-square and missed-target counts stay separate, so a fast time never hides extra errors.

A run receives a score only when you hit at least 24 of the 32 targets and tap no more than 4 of the 8 crossed squares. If either limit is missed, the result shows the counts that explain why the run was not scored.

Compare several runs on the same device and input method. A change is more useful when your median moves in the same direction across repeated runs without your crossed-square taps or missed targets increasing.

The scored block takes about 45 seconds. From the first go to your result, the part timed by the test stays under 60 seconds; time spent on the practice-to-scoring handover screen is not included.

Stay on the page until the result appears. Switching away, refreshing or stopping ends the run without a score; a brief device pause can exclude one go, while a longer interruption can end the run unscored.

This test uses the public-domain Go/No-Go task. The board layout, stimulus sequence and scoring used on this page are original to Brain Skill Hub.

FAQ

What is a good Whack a Mole reaction time?

On this specific 3×3 Whack a Mole reaction test, lower is faster and a median below 330 ms is the fastest descriptive band, but it is not a population norm or a universal target. Compare several runs on the same device and watch the error counts as well as the time.

What does a Go/No-Go Whack a Mole reaction test measure?

A Go/No-Go Whack a Mole reaction test measures how quickly you tap the correct lit target while also counting taps you should withhold and targets you miss during one fixed run. This page reports median reaction time, crossed-square taps and missed targets separately rather than hiding them in one composite score.

What is the average Whack a Mole reaction time?

This Whack a Mole reaction test does not yet have a verified population average from other players, so its score bands cannot tell you what is normal or where you rank. The useful reference is your own median across several runs on the same device, using the same tapping method.

How do you improve your Whack a Mole reaction test score?

The most useful Whack a Mole practice is to keep your hand near the board, watch the whole grid, wait through blank gaps and repeat the same test without trading accuracy for speed. Compare several medians under the same conditions; improvement on this task does not prove improvement in other skills.

How is a Whack a Mole reaction time score calculated?

Your Whack a Mole reaction time score is the median of valid target hits in milliseconds, so lower is faster and one unusually slow tap has less influence than it would on an average. Unusually distant hit times are removed, while crossed-square taps and missed targets remain separate counts.

What Whack a Mole score is needed for a valid result?

A Whack a Mole run receives a reaction-time score only if you hit at least 24 of 32 targets and tap no more than 4 of 8 crossed squares during the 40 scored goes. Missing either limit produces an unscored result with the relevant counts, because too few accurate hits do not support a useful median.

This test is for self-knowledge and practice only. It is a non-standardised adaptation, not a clinical or intelligence assessment, and the result describes one run of one task.
